10 LEGENDARY PINOY SA SPORTS HALL OF FAME

BILANG pagpupugay sa hindi matatawarang naiambag sa larangan ng sports, iniluklok ang 10 pinakamahuhusay na atleta ng kanilang henerasyon sa Philippine Sports Hall of Fame.

Personal na tinanggap ng “Asia’s fastest woman” noong dekada ‘ 80 na si Lydia de Vega ang parangal noong Huwebes sa Philippine International Convention Center kasama sina Paeng Nepomuceno at Bong Coo ng bowling at Erbito Salavarria ng boxing.

Tinanggap naman ng mga kaanak ng mga namayapang sina Benjamin Arda (golf), Filomeno “Boy” CodiñeraCodiñera (softball/ baseball), Loreto Carbonell (basketball), Lita Dela Rosa (bowling), Sen. Ambrosio Padilla (basketball) at Josephine Dela Viña (athletics) ang kanilang mga posthumous award.

Pinangunahan ni Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Ramirez ang awarding rites habang sinaksihan din nina Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas, Games and Amusement Board chairman Baham Mitra at Philippine Olympians Association president Akiko Thomson-Guevara ang pagkilala sa mga natatanging Filipino sports legends.

“This is one of the best opportunities that we have, to pay tribute to our great athletes. Sa dami ng karalangan na ibinigay nila sa ating bayan, they deserve this recognition,” sabi ni Ramirez.
“We also hope that they would be able to inspire our youth, be a role model to the children,” aniya pa.

Sa ngayon ay may 37 inducted awardees na ang Philippine Sports Hall of Fame magmula nang una itong gawin noong 2010.

LEGACY

Makailang beses na nagwagi si de Vega ng gintong medalya sa 100 at 200 meters event ng Southeast Asian Games noong 1980s at inirepresenta ang bansa sa 1984 at 1988 Summer Olympics.

Hawak naman ni Nepomuceno ang apat na Bowling World Cup titles (1976, 1980, 1992 at 1996) habang four-time world champion din sina Coo at dela Rosa.

Si Codiñera na ama ng PBA great na si Jerry Codiñera ay maraming ulit na binitbit ang watawat ng Pilipinas sa international tournaments kabilang na ang 1972 Men’s Softball World Championship na ginanap sa Marikina City at sa 1966 World Amateur Baseball Championship sa Hawaii kung saan nagwagi ang koponan ng tansong medalya.

Naging kauna-unahang Pinoy na mag-qualify para sa Masters Tournament and Open Championships si Arda at nagwagi ng maraming beses sa Asian Golf Circuit (Asian Tour Order of Merit na ngayon) Philippine Open at Japan Golf Tour.

Kabilang si Carbonell sa national team na nagwagi ng ginto sa 1960 Fiba Asia Championship, 1958 Asian Games at tanso sa 1954 Fiba World Championship samantalang si Padilla na naging senador pa ng Pilipinas mula 1957-1972 ay gold medalist sa 1930 Far East Championship Games.

Nagwagi si dela Viña ng ginto noong 1966 Asian Games at lumahok sa 1964, 1968 at 1972 Olympics habang si Salavarria na may 40-11-3 (11 KOs) bago nagretiro noong 1978 ay dating WBC, WBA at Lineal flyweight champion.
